CADIZ, SPAIN-(9-3-2003) The III Carnival Race, which started last Friday and has attracted some of the best sailors in the world, ended today. It was the first test that the organisers have had to face in the build up to the 2003 ISAF World Sailing Championships, which will be held in this bay from the 11th to 23rd September.
Even though racing took place during the first two days in light winds, today was a fine example of the excellent sailing conditions to be enjoyed in this race area in the south of Europe.
The easterly wind (Levante), which shifted to the south (120º), which was between 12 and 14 knots in intensity, provided an excellent day’s racing for the different fleets and spectators, who enjoyed a truly breathtaking spectacle, filled with moments of great tension.
Racing, which started at 12:36 hours, kept the different racing committees busy until well after 15:45 hours. This was enough time to start the 4 remaining races in the 49er class and meant that all 12 races programmed in the sailing instructions were completed.
The organisers of the III Carnival Race, Deporte Andaluz and the Mundo Vela Consortium, have once again expressed their satisfaction with all the teams that make up the different committees, as “the work carried out during these last three days clearly sets the stage for the 2003 ISAF World Sailing Championships to be truly spectacular in September”.
The magnificent sea and wind conditions forecast for the coming days have even meant that some crews have decided to stay on and continue training for the Worlds.
